North
Coast 2005 Winter Duathlon Series Race 2
Sunday 24th July 2005
The North Coast 2005 UBD Duathlon Series Race 2 Report. The
weather report wasn’t promising but isn’t great
sometimes when they get it wrong? Conditions were good –
calm with slightly overcast skies. More importantly many of
the old faces were back along with so much new talent (talent
spelt L o r i, F e a r n l e y, F l y n n & R i c h a
r d s– take your pick). Thirty two fractious “Duathletes”
lined up under starters orders – primed to race, after
having just been inspired by watching the very talented Trystar
kids go through their paces.
Some great racing was in the offering with “Big Guns”
Paul Covich, Leigh Willison, Wade Kelly and Barry Silverlock
expected to dominate. Barry flew out of the barrier and streaked
to lead for the whole first run lap – his office bound
training routine however caught up with him and he was eventually
brought back to the pack during the cycle leg. While Barry
hung on for a courageous 4th placing, the day was won by Paul
Covich, followed by Leigh Willison and Wade Kelly. As for
those for eagerly anticipated challenges; Dave Norton didn’t
get Nimal (but he will next time) The Mulhall brother C.O.’ed
(chickened out – did not show). Yes Sara did beat Eddy
(was it rigged?) Crofty edged out Scotty and Sue spent all
morning looking for Tania (who was actually home in bed all
the while). And finally you guessed right - the “Shank”
thought the race was in Bridgetown. Dave Norton also would
like to thank Fast Freddie Rodrigues a.k.a. Leigh Willison
for being his lead-out man during the cycle leg (A message
to all you knockers - drafting was permitted)
Bravery award for the day (no, not you puncture junkies)
goes to John Hawkins. Johnny held his 50th birthday bash the
night before and the books had 4 – 7 odds on him not
to seeing daylight until at least midday. Not our race director
– chipper as can be, he ran another wonderful event.
It was great to have so many of our sponsors attending –
Wade Kelly (The Marketing Mix), Mark Bergin (BGC), Gabriella
Duffy (Duncraig Physiotherapy) and Geoff Maher (Feature Frames
of Joondalup)
It was also wonderful to see so many new faces to the Club
– a big welcome Erika Lori, Sarah & Ashley Fearnley,
Kyra Flynn, Ashley Davis, Sue Libbis & David Croft.
