NORTH
COAST TRYSTARS - JUNIOR TRIATHLON
- A fantastic program introducing children aged 7 to 15 to the sport of triathlon (swim/cycle/run).
- An opportunity to experience a new fun sport suitable for all ages.
- A program where everyone’s a winner and the emphasis is on participation not competition.
The TRYstars program has finished for the 2007/08 Season. The new season starts at the beginning of July.
We have 3 DUATHLONS (run/cycle/run) lined up @ Craigie Leisure Centre, Whitfords Ave, Craigie on the following Saturday afternoons:
- Saturday 26th July; 3 – 4.30pm.
- Saturday 23rd August; 3 – 4.30pm.
- Saturday 13th September; 3 – 4.30pm.
Registration: 2.30pm. Race Briefing: 2.45pm. Start: 3pm. Presentations, when last child finishes event: Approx 4pm.
How it works: Distances are selected to suit child’s age and ability. For instance: Age 7 – 9 Can do 200m run/ 1km cycle/ 500m run, but if they wish they can do up to 3km cycle – we let the children decide, though we encourage new TRYstars to start at shorter distances and build up to a longer distance at the next event if they thought it was a bit short. 12+ ages can do a maximum of 800m run/6k cycle/2k run if they wish, but can also do the same as the younger ones if they wish. We have maximum distances but not minimum distances for each age. Everyone receives a chocolate medal at the end and a certificate and we do spot prize draws from the competitor numbers rather than particularly rewarding 1st , 2nd or 3rd. It is all about getting out there and having a go and above all having fun!!
NEW JUNIOR PATHWAYS PROGRAM:
North Coast is delighted to announce they have been awarded a very generous Sports Development Grant of nearly $10, 000 a year for the next 2 years by the City of Joondalup to develop a Junior Pathways Program for 12+ ages and an improved coaching structure within the club.
We are working hard to begin this program in October and expect the TRYstars will benefit hugely from it if they remain in the sport. Because of this we may see some changes to the TRYstars program particularly at the Senior end of the TRYstars program, though we are also trying to address the demand for more stimulating activities for the 10 – 12 year olds as well. One change I know some of you will be very disappointed about is we are dropping the sessions at Kinross and running the program weekly from Sorrento. This has not been an easy decision, but with the new coaching structures we are trying to set up, we feel we need to focus on one location for the time being in order to make them successful. I apologise to those of you who this will mean travelling much further, but hope you will appreciate the improved structure we are planning and take advantage of it.
TRYstars Registration:
- Online: Go to: www.triwa.org.au/membership.htm and follow the prompts. Then turn up to any TRYstar session including registration day (In October, date TBA) with a copy of the TRYstar membership receipt. Dates for the summer season will be up on this website in September.
The new TRYstars membership season starts again on 1st July 2008. The prices have been held the same as last season. See the fee structure below. Please bring your receipt with you to the duathlons to show you have joined.
For those of you who are still unsure as to whether you wish to join the club: Changes in our insurance structure now allows us to give families, who are interested in trying Triathlon, a couple of sessions at training or participation in our Have-a-Go Triathlons/Duathlons before they become members of the club. At the training sessions this will be free and at the Have-a-Go Triathlon/Duathlons there will be a charge of $10.

Special Information on Membership for 12 – 15 year olds:
When signing up you have TWO OPTIONS:
- You can choose to sign up as TRYstars members. See cost above. This entitles you to our entire TRYstars program and also allows you to PARTICIPATE in TWA races for the juniors (12 – 15), but because TRYstars is all about being a participation program, it does not allow you to receive points or Trophies in the TWA series either for yourself or for the club.
- You can choose to sign up as Junior Competitive members. This will cost approximately $95 - $100. This entitles you to join in our TRYstars program, but not receive a TRYstar T-shirt or swim cap, and also allows you to RACE in TWA races for the juniors (12-15), and allows you and the Club to receive points or Trophies in the TWA series.
All members who are in the 7 – 12 age group in the club are treated as TRYstars with all the same privileges, such as free T-shirt and swim cap. All members in the 12 – 15 age group are welcome to TRYstar training sessions and Have-a-Go Triathlons/Duathlons.
The Summer Program will start in October as usual and we will be posting information on this site as the program details are finalised. For those who are new to the club we have left up last season’s program so you can see the sort of activities included in our sessions, though please note there will be no sessions at Kinross in the coming season.

Programs for 12+ TRYstars: Triathlon Australia recommend 12 is the age for TRYstars to start to move from participation to competition in the sport if they wish. With this in mind and to further develop the skills for this age we offer the following:
- Cycle rides from Sorrento on selected Friday nights. See program above.
- Opportunity to compete in the fortnightly Adult Aquathlons, though 12 to 15 year olds must prove their swimming ability to the TRYstars coaches and/or race director before being allowed to start.
- Accompanied trips to Junior Triathlons around Perth with other club members to assist in making those first steps from TRYstar to triathlete.
Swimming is not included in our training. (This may change for next season) We recommend our TRYstars learn correct stroke technique through the school and vac swim programs or a specific swim program such as State Swim at Whitford or Joondalup. These skills should then be practiced with regular visits to the pool or ocean. Our triathlons include a swim leg at the start adjusted to the child’s swimming ability. This is always checked with parents at registration for the triathlons.
TRYstars Membership includes:
- TRYstars T shirt and swim cap.
- Membership of North Coast Triathlon Club (NCTC), Membership of Triathlon Western Australia (TWA) and Membership of Triathlon Australia (TA).
- Free entry to the Winter Series of "Have a Go" North Coast Duathlons.
- Free entry to the 5 Race Summer Series of "Have a Go" North Coast Triathlons. First event: October, at Craigie Leisure Centre, Whitfords Ave, Craigie. Click HERE for previous year’s race series information;
- Weekly skill and fun activity sessions from October to April. These are run every Friday at 5pm finishing each week with a mini Duathlon (run/cycle/run) and a spot prize draw. Sausage sizzles are held fortnightly at Sorrento. See above Summer TRYstars Program, January to April 2008.
- Regular TRYstars updates and information.
- Bike and helmet checks.
- Insurance for racing and training.
